Renee DeTar, RYT 500 Anatomy - NEW Perspectives
of Alignment Plus Vocal Skills: Becoming an Exceptional
Teacher/Student of Yoga
Friday and Sat., June 20 and 21, 2008 With
Renee founded of our sister school in Wichita, Kansas.
A 22-year practitioner, she is certified at many levels
of energy therapies and holds her M.A. in Liberal Studies
and B.A. in Education from Wichita State University.
Renee reviews yoga teacher trainer applications across
the United States and Europe for Yoga Alliance. Her
primary yoga teacher is Aadil Palkhivala, and for the
last 17 years has continued her study with him and
assists in teacher trainings in the U.S. and London.
She is an endearing friend, a wonderful mother, and
one of our personal favorite yoga teachers.
The weekend allows us to absorb
form and function of the muscles & skeleton and
major joints in asana, while combining both lecture
and practice of postures, we move to deeper work:
Friday, June 20, 2 to 4:30 p.m. Principles of Alignment.
Understanding the bio mechanical principles of alignment
set the skilled teacher apart from the rest. Optimal
alignment attunes us to the deep order of the organic
body, in turn expanding awareness injury prevention.
As BKS Iyengar says, the body is the most important
vehicle for ultimate feedback to our physical, mental,
and emotional body and ultimately to our souls. We
practice asana in standing, twisting, forward bending,
backward bending, and inversion.
Friday, June 20, 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Bio mechanics of Movement in Asana.
The skilled teacher of yoga knows more than how to
take a pose but knows the subtle “Movements” which
create space, alignment, energy and balance. For
example, many new teachers fail to teach the movement
of the coccyx in Trikonasana. Renee will take us
through the key movements in fundamental postures
that students need to be strong and stable.
Sat., June 21, 9:30 to Noon
Principles of Safe Adjustments for healthy or hurting
student.
The exceptional teacher of yoga trust the knowledge:
Speak, Show, Touch. When touch is proper and safe
and honored with integrity to do no harm , we lift
our students to new levels of integration and awareness.
Renee shows us how to help common injuries to the
a. knees b. hamstrings. c. complaints of sciatica
and back pain and d. shoulder injury or soreness.
What is going on that you need to know from the anatomical
bone and muscle and nerve perspective? Renee’s
clear instruction in helping these challenges give
you knowledge you will use for life.
Sat., June 21, 2 to 4:30 p.m.
Principles of Voice and Pacing.
Yes our voice has a lot to do with anatomy. Once
the new teacher of yoga understands how to use the
Bio mechanics of speech, the voice projects with
authority and clarity. In this session, you will
be asked to demonstrate a standing posture such as
Tadasana or Virabhadrasana II and practice teaching
to become more skilled and confident.
Attendance at all sessions required for teacher’s
training. Fee of $255 paid by May 25 DOES
NOT INCLUDE the book. Pre-order from Amazon or direct
from publisher: The Key Muscles of Hatha Yoga; Scientific
Keys Volume I, by Ray Long MD; 2006 3rd edition; www.bandhayoga.com.
Individual classes are $80
Each for those wishing to attend only part of this
workshop. Cost after May 25 or at the door is $270,
no exceptions. Fee includes final take-home
examination, grading and feedback on the exam.

Awaken Your Yoga to More Health & Freedom
July 24, 25, 26, 2008
The body has its own natural design and intelligence, and
we need only to bring the body to a place where it can 'remember'
and re-establish its own wisdom, even as it continues to
face its own structural, genetic or trauma-induced challenges.
This perspective upon health and healing is the larger understanding
of yoga.
‘Realization’ is the profound recognition of
the divine wisdom at the core of our being. Yoga is the process
of this unfolding. We focus on structural therapeutic issues
having to do with muscles and joints. We expand our horizons
to look into the therapeutic value of pranayama (breath work)
and meditation.
Doug has long been a favorite guest of The Yoga Studio,
and always offers a rich and bountiful experience of yoga.
See his bio below.
Teacher’s Training Day Thursday
July 24 Learn to Sequence Successful Classes 9:30 a.m. to
Noon
Philosophy: Ayurveda Principles – Elements, Doshas & Gunas
2:00 to 4:30 pm
In morning Teacher’s Training we rely upon Doug’s
insights to formulate new and powerful sequencing targeting
the spine, hips and shoulders. The body has a few basic postural
patterns that are showing up with greater frequency in our
contemporary world. These are easily recognizable, as well
as the imbalances they typically create, and there are well-defined
sets of exercises and asanas that directly address these
imbalances. Plus, we will work hands on adjustments on one
another, learning to spot misalignment with our eyes and
senses.
In the afternoon, we bring back Doug’s delightful
presentation on Ayurvedic knowledge of the how Earth, Water,
Air and Fire inter-relate to the doshas of Kapha, Pitta,
and Vata. He leads us to understand how emotions, diet, movement,
prana, asana and life style work together to add ever increasing
quality of life. Doug’s presentation of this complex
philosophy will make it clear as a bell and easy to interpret
for every day living and help you to pass it on to your students
with greater understanding and clarity. $140 day
fee

Intention and Awakening: the Chakras 9:30 to Noon
At the core of our being, yoga touches the deepest level
of our physical, emotional and spiritual vitality, awakening
new vitality, perception that takes us forward in the unfolding
of our lives. Through the doorway of work with the psoas
as well as the feet, we establish a new sense of grounding,
clarity and inner freedom. We explore the path of emotions
in yoga practice, and the power of intention in asana for
unfolding the power of the chakras, particularly the heart
chakra. $70
teaches yoga classes and trainings in the Washington, D.C.
area at the Health Advantage Yoga Center in Herndon, Virginia
and at Willow Street Yoga in Takoma Park, Maryland, as well
as at other locations in the U.S. and Europe.
Doug's asana sessions present a steady flow that has a
lively yet meditative quality in the true spirit of yoga.
His clear, jargon-free instruction allows you to obtain greater
integrity, opening, freedom and expansion in the postures
and you will be challenged but not exhausted. Whether you
practice Ashtanga, Hatha or Iyengar or Anusara yoga, you
will enjoy and appreciate Doug's classes.
Doug has a degree in philosophy from at Georgetown University,
a Master's Degree in Philosophy from Fordham University.
He was teaching college-level philosophy courses at Fordham
when he met the renowned meditation master, Swami Muktananda.
Doug says, "Through his example and teaching I saw that
any pursuit of wisdom cannot be purely intellectual, but
must be grounded in practice and experience. I began with
the practice of meditation, and was introduced to Hatha yoga
in 1985. In 1986 I traveled to India to spend the next seven
years there studying yoga in all its aspects in Gurudev Siddha
Peeth, the ashram and international retreat center for learning
yoga and meditation established by Swami Muktananda in the
countryside outside of Bombay."

ANXIETY, ANGER AND DEPRESSION
YOGA SESSION
Two Sessions: Thursday & Friday
Many people in our culture suffer from anxiety, anger and/or
depression. This workshop will combine the Western theories
about these conditions with a brief introduction to what
Ayurveda (the Indian science of medicine) teaches as well.
We will practice the asanas and pranayamas that can be helpful.
How much yoga do you need to be free of anger, anxiety,
and depression? We'll explore this question by combining
a philosophical discussion and asana practice, with the aim
of bringing sweetness, humor, and clarity into our lives.
Background: Ayurveda is one of the oldest
systems of natural health care, originating in the ancient
traditions of India over 5,000 years ago. Now considered
one of the leading forms of holistic medicine available in
the ‘West, it addresses all factors that influence
the quality of our lives. The term Ayurveda combines two
Sanskrit words—ayur, which means life, and veda, which
means science of knowledge. The principles of Ayurveda state
that nothing exists in isolation, so that everything you
interact with, your diet, family, work or relationships,
has an effect on your health and wellbeing. One guiding principle
of Ayurveda is that mind and body are connected and that
the mind has a profound influence over our health and well-being.
While conventional Western medicine is still grounded in
the paradigm of mind-body separation, Ayurveda holds that
health is more than the absence of disease; it is a dynamic
state of balance and integration of body, mind, and spirit.

Opening Lecture Expanding Exponential Success as a Yoga Instructor
in the 21st Century
During this opening lecture Aadil will set the tone for
the weekend and share his incredible insights about abundance
and prosperity for those who are on the spiritual journey
of yoga. Highly gifted, yet humble, Aadil will inspire us
to create stronger and clearer choices for our success. In
one of his keynote addresses at a Yoga Journal conference,
he left a new legacy for all sincere teachers to follow when
he talked about the importance of both spiritual and material
prosperity. Welcome to an extraordinary gathering that promises
to bring light and knowledge that will help to change our
lives for the greater good and for our purpose here on Earth.
1:l5 - 4:00p.m.
Feeling the Heart in Standing Poses
“ Yoga is to be lived,” says Purna yoga co-founder
Aadil. Our wonderful teacher shares from his heart and will
inspire and remind us of the true meaning of yoga. Aadil
and his wife, Mirra, started the College of Purna Yoga, in
Bellevue, WA, to address the bigger picture of yoga. Rather
than practice asana for the sake of perfecting asana, he
encourages us to find our dharma, our life’s purpose,
through the study of asana, philosophy, meditation and lifestyle.
While asana is important, its true purpose is to help the
body become a better vehicle for our spirit. “Why do
we practice?” Aadil asks. “We practice for the
exploration, discovery, and fulfillment of our dharma.” Our
dharma is to embody our soul.
In this session, enjoy the non-ending camaraderie of our
beloved teacher as he guides us. He will teach how healing
our self helps us to have better relationships with others,
our family, the earth, and our food. He will talk about life
being our greatest mirror and how throughout our lives we
are given opportunities for success and healing. He will
show us how to open the ribs and chest to expand the feeling
of love in the Heart Center, as well as help us open to the
life force energy of the heart.
“ Going on around us is a magnificent cosmic evolution
of which we are all a part, maybe pulled into it kicking
and screaming,” he has said. “But if we choose
to participate the suffering will end.”
Welcome to one of our most outstanding teacher trainings
of this decade. Open to advanced students, teachers and teachers
in training. Teacher Training Intensive: $l70
6:30 – 8:30pm
Earth and Aspiration in Purna Yoga
Purna Yoga is a living and breathing creation. Each time
we practice yoga we have an opportunity for our spirit to
merge with our physical body. Each moment of being is a new
moment. As practitioners of yoga, each time we come to the
mat we should start our practice as if we have never practiced
before. When the yoga practice becomes the same, a numbness
enters our being and we become robotic. Yoga is intended
to reveal to us our weaknesses and our strengths. Yoga is
intended to help us unfold and grow. Most importantly, yoga
is intended to cultivate awareness and sensitivity.
In this workshop Aadil will Purna Yoga touch three important
aspects of Purna Yoga:
Aspiration for the Divine
Surrender of the ego to the soul
Rejection of all obstructions to the path of total transformation
“ Purna” means “complete,” and
Purna Yoga distills and integrates the vastness of yoga into
an invaluable set of tools for transformation and healing.
Reminding us that yoga is far more than a system of exercise,
Purna Yoga offers wisdom and techniques for the union of
the body and the mind with the spirit. Using awareness, precision,
and concentration, Purna Yoga inspires the evolution from
our lower nature to our Divine Self. Purna Yoga is the art
of loving yourself by living from the heart.
The lineage of Purna Yoga is based on the teachings of Sri
Aurobindo and The Mother, the Vedas, Patanjali, B.K.S. Iyengar,
and the systems of Ayurvedic, Chinese and Western nutrition,
synthesized by the personal experience of Aadil Palkhivala
and Mirra, the founders of Purna Yoga. With its roots in
the past and its reach into the future, Purna Yoga is here
to help create the world which we have all dreamed of.
This class contains lecture, asana, and meditation. $80 All
levels welcome.

and situations at home. With aches and pains no longer nagging
you, with your nervous system in the state of calmness, and
with your mind free of congested or frantic thoughts, you
find you are able to respond to life quite differently from

From the Root & Up: Hip Openers, Twists and Forward bends
in Purna Yoga™

find new space in these over-used, dull or weak areas. He
will prepare us first with stretching and then with strengthening.
You will make your spine and legs stronger, giving you more
freedom of movement. You will explore your connection to
the Earth and learn to connect you’re your hips, legs
and feet with loving kindness. Even as we work in asana,
this is a playful workshop to make our bodies feel happier.

happier too! Walk in dragging….leave skipping and singing. $90

“Moving
from the Organs”
Judith Lasater Intensive
October 29, 30, and 31 2009
We often focus on practicing our poses from
the spine, arms and legs. But the ancient teachings of yoga
also dealt with the opening and quieting the organs of the
body, like the heart, kidneys and liver that are found in
the “kunda” or vessel holding these organs.
During this workshop we will focus on specific
poses that create a healthy balance of the organs in the
chest and abdomen, as well as explore the theories of why
they work. All types of poses will be studied, including
backbends, inversions, forward bends and twists. We will
also spend some time on specific therapeutic applications
that will be immediately applicable to ourselves and to our
students. We will begin each day with a focus intention and
then go directly to practicing Active poses. In the afternoon
we will practice Quiet poses, meditation and pranayama. Throughout
the workshop we will return our awareness to stabilizing
and balancing from the inside as well as how to teach others
to do so.
